The Vettes bring family values, indie rock to Chelsea’s
By George Monson
Music business major Rachel Vette hunted Loyola’s campus in search of like-minded musicians to bring her aspiration into star-dation. Instead, she found what she was looking for under her very own River Ridge roof.
One by one, Rachel recruited her brothers Chad, Todd, and Brian from their project called The Hush and began working on The Vettes. Soon, they recorded their sarcastic spoof of celebrity culture entitled “Give Em What They Want” in their home studio in River Ridge. Since then, New Orleans’ top 40 station B97 has placed the song into its daily rotation – a milestone achievement for a local, independent band. Also, MTV has recently licensed the Vettes’ music for use in its programming.
Not surprisingly, The Vettes are now fielding e-mails and calls from major label talent scouts inquiring about their band. In an era of disarray and depressed CD sales, record companies are more likely to take a chance on a band with proven commercial appeal.
Rachel’s vocals recall a fiery attitude reminiscent of Shirley Manson of Garbage or Hole’s Courtney Love. The lyrics, the sound, the melody, the crisp, the vibe, the feel, and the groove are all included in the package brought out by The Vettes.
The Vettes siblings grew up in Gentilly, learning from their father who was a local musician. In the late 1980s, the family moved to their current River Ridge home. Bassist Mitch Gray is the only member of the band that is not a relative; however, he is pronounced as being the Vette’s “adopted brother.”
Performing with siblings “works for us,” Rachel said. “We don’t always get along, but when we fight, we get it all out and then we’re fine five minutes later. The disadvantage is everybody’s into each other’s business. We know each other pretty well.”
With their growing popularity, The Vettes will be joining the ranks of well-known Louisiana bands such as Better Than Ezra and Cowboy Mouth. Consequently, big crowds are expected wherever the Vettes play, especially when they join up with Oh Juliet and Norcio at Chelsea’s this Thursday, Jan. 15. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door or in advance.
