Barristers Bowl VI is great success

Donating money has always left people with a warm feeling inside, and that feeling is only amplified when a child is involved. The LSU Law Football Club hosted its sixth annual Barristers Bowl at 1:30 p.m. last Saturday in Olympia Stadium on Perkins Road.

The chilly weekend weather did not stop the dedicated 600-800 students, parents, faculty and administration of the law center from attending this year's Barristers Bowl. Student involvement included more than 60 players in complete football gear, 40 cheerleaders, and several coaches. There were three Commissioners of Barristers Bowl VI: Gibson Laborde, Sean Corcoran, and Dixon McMakin.

The goal was to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Ian, a five-year-old boy from Gonzales who is recovering from Leukemia, has a wish to travel to Walt Disney World to meet Mickey Mouse. The LSU Law Football Club had high hopes to make this dream a reality for Ian.

That dream should easily become a reality since Barristers Bowl VI raised well over $12,000 that included donations, t-shirt sales, raffles and two auctions. For the second year in a row, a dinner for four and Natural Light with Vice Chancellor Cheney Joseph was the highest selling auction item. With Make-A-Wish being the first priority for money, any excess money will be donated to another cause. Last year, the Ryan LoProto Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Law Center was given the excess funds.

Laborde said, "When we started all the work for this, and knew that we were going to be helping Ian's wish to come true, we thought we were going to be able to inspire him, but when he came out to practice for the first time and all of the players met him and put a face and name to this cause, it really ended up that Ian was inspiring us."

Ian and his family made it to the game, as well as last year's recipient, Alex Klein and his family.

The Purple Team won this year's game with a score of 26-14. The Gold Team has only won once out of six years. The MVP of the game was the Purple Team's Jason St. Julien.

Corcoran followed, "Making this event a success and making Ian's wish come true took a lot of time and a lot of work from a lot of students. It is truly amazing to see so many people who would normally be tucked away in a classroom or the law library adjust their schedules and give so much of their time to help a worthy cause."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is not the only charity that the Barrister Bowl has supported in the past. In the last six years, the Barristers Bowl has also donated to the Tsunami Relief Fund, Desire Street Ministries, and the Student Hurricane Network.
