World renowned artist/architect to visit LSU
On Wednesday, March 26, room 103 of LSU’s Design Building will serve as an observatory for those wishing to peek into the mind of world-renowned artist and architect Vito Acconci. The Brooklyn-born artist has made a name for himself across the world by blending the fine arts and landscape architecture.
His work as a performance artist once found him underneath a sloped platform, masturbating, while he fantasized aloud to those walking above him. Acconci sees possible beauty in places like Danish dumps and blank canvases in everyday settings like busy airports. Starting at 6 p.m., Acconci will be giving a slide presentation of his work. If you haven’t seen his work before, check out AcconciStudio.com to get an idea about his genius ahead of time.
A night of ska and odd influences at NGT
North Gate Tavern’s apparent affinity for diversity will be on display on Friday, March 28 when the stage out back is inundated with the sounds of Ska, not necessarily the venue’s normal fare. First up, Among Criminals, a Philly-based band whose reggae-rock calls on such diverse influences as Bob Marley and The Police, Pearl Jam and Erykah Badu.
Next, locals The Tellers, with influences like Peter Tosh and The Pharcyde, will take to the stage providing what they call, “Reggae raindrops for a drought-stricken nation.” The night will close with The Stellaphonics, attempting to invoke the spirits of the likes of Justin Hinds and James Brown to close out the evening. This won’t be your average NGT show. Hey, what’s that smell?
When was the last time you wore your prom dress?
If the answer is anything other than, “Last night in a drunken stupor,” then maybe you should think about donating it to those less fortunate. The Cinderella Project of Baton Rouge is a non-profit working to find prom dresses for the girls of Istrouma High who might not be able to otherwise have a prom dress at all.
Why not let someone else enjoy that dress rather than let it collect some more dust in your closet? Check out CinderellaProjectBR.org to find out more about the Project or how to make a tax-deductible donation to the cause.
Ephemeral Gallery hosts second Spring Invitational
Baton Rouge has many unique spots for art. The Ephemeral Gallery is definitely among them. Having seen the unquestionable success of last year’s Uncommon Thread show, the question has become not how many people show up to events at the 521 N. 19 Street locale, but if it can hold all of those lining up outside.
On Saturday, March 29, The Ephemeral Gallery will host its Second Annual Spring Invitational with featured artists Mary Beyt, John W. Earley, Shawne Major, Winifred Ross Riley, Chris Simon and Annie Smith. The one-night event starts off at 7 p.m. For more info, call (225) 343-9145.
