Be the next Guitar Hero
By Ryan Burns
Have you ever played air guitar and thought, “I’m a serious badass”? Now is your chance to prove it. Activision has launched the Rock Icon competition, and the Internet is psyched. The winner will have a character based on him or her in the next edition of Guitar Hero. If that doesn’t get you ready to rock, nothing will.
The press release puts it best:
“How do you do it? It's very simple: make a video recording of yourself imbuing anything from a guitar to a Guitar Hero controller to a tennis racket with the mystical power of rock; shred to the best of your ability to your favorite rock song and administer lordship over the universe through whatever axe you choose to wield. Then register on ReleaseYourRockstar.com and upload your video.
“Every week we will take the best clips and put them together in a righteous montage that may very well offset the Earth's axis. The videos will also stand alone as their own competitive submissions. The video which receives the most diggs, blogs, views and online postings will win its creator the Grand Prize, not to mention eternal glory – a character created in his or her likeness in the next incarnation of Guitar Hero!”
The contest’s Web site, ReleaseYourRockstar.com, already has “righteous montages” available to view, as well as the contest’s viral marketing video. The viral video features people performing for judges a-la-American Idol. One of the judges in the video is none other than Lemmy, the rock legend from Motörhead.
While entertaining, the performances in the video are not part of the competition. However, according to the site, Lemmy will actually be the man who makes the final decision marking the winner. All that would-be rockers need to do is rock their hearts out and hope for the best.
This contest redefines “interactivity” when it comes to video games. Sure you can play a game, you can even upload your face onto a character in a few Tony Hawk games, but when was the last time you could be in every single copy of a best-selling game?
