What’s happening in Baton Rouge this summer
By Jonathan Specht
If you’ll be spending the summer in Baton Rouge and aren’t sure what to do with your free time, here are a few things to do that you may not have thought of.
Throughout the summer:
Leisure Classes at the LSU Union
With 82 classes available, including 17 new courses, LSU’s Union Leisure Classes offer something for just about anyone. If you’re interested in learning conversational German, salsa or cha cha dancing, menu planning, furniture repair, yoga, golf or just about anything else, a leisure class may be held for it. Classes will take place between June 2 and August 7. Register online at www.lsu.edu/leisureclasses.
Wednesdays between May and July: The Male Revue
If you’re interested in seeing a bunch of sweaty, mostly naked men, they’ll be available for your eyes every Wednesday night at the Texas Club between May 6 and July 2. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show will start at 8:30 and last until approximately 11 p.m. Drink specials will be available for ladies for just $2.
May 13: Zoo and Me Morning at the Baton Rouge Zoo
For those with children between the ages of 3 and 6, the Baton Rouge Zoo will be having a special event on May 13 and the second Tuesday of every month, Zoo and Me Morning. The event will include a train ride, animal encounters, art projects, and many other projects for parent and child. The cost is $15 for one child with one parent or guardian or $25 for two children with one parent or guardian.
June 12: Baton Rouge Uncorked
Those who enjoy wine will be interested in Baton Rouge Uncorked, a wine tasting event for charity. The organization’s June 12 event will be held at the Old Governor’s Mansion from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will benefit the Foundation for Historical Louisiana’s Save the Huey P. Long Pool and Fieldhouse Project.
The theme wine of the night will be California Whites. Those in attendance will form teams of up to three, which bring three bottles of wine from a particular winery. Two of the three bottles will undergo blind tasting, and the third bottle will be awarded as part of the prize for the winning team or put up for silent auction.
June 13-21: Louisiana High School Finals Rodeo (Gonzalez)
High school cowboys and cowgirls from around the state of Louisiana will be competing to be state champion in 12 rodeo events. The top four competitors from each event will represent the state at the National High School Finals Rodeo, which will be held in Springfield, Illinois.
Events will include Bull Riding, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Team Roping, Tie-down Calf Roping, Breakaway Calf Roping, Goat Tying and Steer Wrestling. The rodeo will be held at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzalez.
