Brass Bed’s Midnight Matinee
By Madeline Brown
p>Lafayette, La. vintage rock band Brass Bed released their album Midnight Matinee earlier this spring.Midnight Matinee celebrates early elements of rhythm and blues/rock ‘n’ roll with steel guitar riffs, classic harmonies reminiscent of barbershop quartets and central keyboard jams. At the same time it chimes a refreshingly original take on rock music.
Brass Bed plays with a stark, clever contrast between early and contemporary rock from track to track, then within each track. It’s really quite impressive the way they mix and match with such quiet confidence and style.
The four-part vocals and cool, stylish harmonies make you want to be a part of the Brass Bed Choir, singing along with the back-up “oohs” and “aahs.”
Every song is smart and intriguing. But standout tracks include the romantic “Make Me Cry,” suggestive of vocal harmony groups of the 1940s. “Polar Bird” has a killer “Helter Skelter”-ish steel guitar riff and electric guitar solo. “On the Road” has a rhythm and feel-good vibe you can’t ignore.
You can purchase Midnight Matinee from cdbaby.com, or find the link from their MySpace page at MySpace.com/brassbed. Catch them at The Spanish Moon June 6 with Secret Annexe and Big Blue Marble.
