Three of a kind goes to five

[Comment Below]

By Kaiya Morrison

This week’s “Three of a Kind” is a bit different. Because this is the last issue before we go on a short break, we thought it might be nice to give you previews for the weeks we will be out of print.

Pick a show and have some fun!

May 6-13

The Mighty Orq

If you like guitar driven, jam band style rock, then you’ll fall in love with the Houston-based southern rock band, The Mighty Orq. They will perform at North Gate Tavern on Thursday, May 8, and this is one show that will keep your feet moving.

No Fuego

What could be better than punk rock and bagpipes? Our local boys in No Fuego have certainly figured out a winning formula. If you’ve never attended one of their shows, you can find them at North Gate Tavern on Friday, May 9.

Mindless Self Indulgence

WARNING: Attending a Mindless Self Indulgence show may cause seizures. Nah! Just kidding. But seriously, MSI is an intense show that should not be missed. Plan a special trip to The House of Blues in New Orleans on Monday, May 12, and I promise it will be well worth it. For die-hard fans, the fact this is an all-ages show will mean nothing, because even seeing this band while standing next to Sally, a 14-year-old girl with bad acne, will not lessen the show.

May 14-20

Werewolf: The Legendary ‘80s Cover Band

CONGRATULATIONS! For all of you LSU seniors who want to throw down on graduation night (that’s Friday, May 16 for those of you with time left to serve), then the annual graduation party at Fred’s is the place you want to be. Werewolf: The Legendary ‘80s Cover Band, will be rocking the place with all of your favorite hits.

Field Day, The Casuals, The Physics of Meaning

There has been little activity from Red Star Bar regarding live music, but this summer, there will be some shows occurring that are worth checking out. On Thursday, May 15, two local bands, Field Day and The Casuals, will rock the place with the North Carolina-based band, The Physics of Meaning. Each of the bands are worth checking out, so head on out to Red Star to support the live music program there.

Steroside, Echovalve, Midnight to Twelve

Three out-of-town bands will roll into Click’s Billiards on Saturday, May 17. Steroside, Echovalve, and Midnight to Twelve are all from different cities, and each have a different take on melodic rock. What is certain is that this will be a high-energy show you won’t want to miss.

May 21-27

Harptalica

Whether you’re a fan of Metallica or not, you must check out Harptallica at North Gate Tavern on Thursday, May 22. Ashley Toman and Patricia Kline bring their massive harps to bars and perform acoustic versions of Metallica songs, and it’s one crazy show. Seriously, think about this. It’s Metallica with harps. What else do I have to say?!

Michael Foster Project and Friends

If you love to dance and are a fan of good New Orleans style funk music, then make sure to check out The Michael Foster Project at The Varsity Theatre on Friday, May 23. MFP puts on a regular show at Chelsea’s Café every Wednesday night, but this show will be a little different from what you’re used to seeing. At the Varsity, The Michael Foster Project will invite other local musicians up on the stage to jam with them, and there will be a local DJ, too.

Clinic

Although I would never cite Wikipedia as a source, I have to say the best description I ever read about the Liverpool-based band, Clinic, was found there. “Despite widespread critical acclaim, they are still considered too raw by the mainstream.” Exactly! Performing at The Spanish Moon on Saturday, May 24, Clinic is a band known for pushing the limits, and for wearing surgical masks on stage. Now tell me that’s not something worth checking out.

May 28-June 3

Murder by Death

When a band is named after a Neil Simon movie, you go see the band, especially when it’s a band that seems to combine punk rock with alternative country. Murder by Death will win you over with deep, soulful vocals, and equally intense instrumentation. Make sure to support this Indiana-based band on Thursday, May 29 at Chelsea’s Café.

Echelon

So it may be a little odd to suggest driving to New Orleans to see a band based out of Baton Rouge, but I swear there’s a good reason. The local metal band Echelon will be performing at The House of Blues on Friday, May 30, and there is no doubt in my mind that this will be an amazing show. Echelon typically performs in Baton Rouge at Click’s Billiards and manages to turn the stage into a frenzy of excitement. Now just imagine if they had a stage twice the size, and you’ll start to understand why I’m pushing this show.

6 Pack Deep

Just because you’re from Louisiana and have brass in your band, doesn’t mean you have to be a blues, jazz, or funk band. The Baton Rouge-based band, 6 Pack Deep, combines ska with a little punk rock to produce a danceable, fun-loving show. 6 Pack Deep will perform two shows at The Caterie on Saturday, May 31. The first will be an all-ages show beginning around 5 p.m., and the second will be at night for 18+.

June 4-10

Man Plus Building

Instrumental rock is a hard sell, but not so much for one of the newest local bands on the scene, Man Plus Building. The band admits they do not include vocals because they “just don’t sing well,” but that doesn’t mean they can’t play well. Rather, these guys will call your attention with the first song, and will not let go. Make sure to catch them at North Gate Tavern on Thursday, June 5.

Ladytron

Liverpool bands will be in no short supply during the summer. After Clinic, you can find the electronic pop band, Ladytron, at The House of Blues in New Orleans on Sunday, June 8. Where Clinic is a bit off the mainstream map, Ladytron has a little more commercial appeal, and appeals to a broader audience. However, this is not your typical pop. Rock fans will find as much pleasure as fans of pop or electronica.

Saving Abel

Chances are if you’ve listened to the radio at all in the last six months, then you’ve heard of the Mississippi-based band, Saving Able. Their song “Addicted” has made waves around the nation, and this band is on fire right now. This will be the fourth visit for Saving Able to Baton Rouge this year, and if you haven’t seen them yet, now is your chance. They will perform at The Varsity Theatre on Tuesday, June 10. Meriwether will also be performing the show.

Boston and Styx

To end things out, here is a friendly notice that Boston and Styx will be performing at The River Center on June 19, and tickets are on sale. The show is being brought to you by 98.1 for their birthday bash.
