The Forum35 Art Melt is one of the highlights of the year for those into Baton Rouge’s burgeoning art scene. The Fifth Annual Art Melt will be held at The Brunner Gallery (inside The Shaw Center) and will showcase the best that the state has to offer.
The deadline for entries is May 20 and any Louisiana resident over the age of 18 can enter this juried exhibition. The Art Melt will be held on Friday, July 11.
Erotica at Insomneeacks
There are few places in Baton Rouge that boast as eclectic a schedule as The Insomneeacks Art House on Florida Boulevard. Located behind The Broadmoor Theatre, Insomneeacks is one of the premiere locales in the city for poetry readings that you won’t mind sitting through. In fact, on May 14, you might just want to go back to your significant others’ place and lay down after sitting through it.
Insomneeacks will be hosting A Night of Erotica – Poetry and Lust, beginning at 7:30. This is sure to be a night that is not only entertaining, but seductive as well. Tiger Weekly suggests bringing a change of underwear. For more information, call (225) 935-2824.
Learn to paint like Chuck Close!
Recently, you may have wandered through The LSU Museum of Art’s amazing exhibit, An Adventure in the Arts, only to be stopped in your tracks by Chuck Close’s massive portrait, “Phil.” The famous work was created using various shades of handmade paper. Now, you can not only learn about Close, one of the most respected artists of our time, but also this amazing painting style.
The Museum of Art’s Second Saturday: Paint with Pulp workshop will begin at 10 am on Saturday, May 10 and will allow you to create your own work in the style of Close. This family friendly event will run until 2 p.m., but you want to get there early because supplies are on a first-come, first-served basis. Call (225) 389-7200 to find out more.
Candlebox to play The Varsity
Baton Rouge’s most frequently indulged guilty pleasure is the Nineties Alt-rock band. The Varsity is once again supplying the city’s fix with Candlebox, playing the famed Highland Street venue on Monday, May 12. Presented by 104 The X, the Seattle-based band will be playing all their crowd pleasers, including “Far Behind” and “You.”
Chances are, they’ll also give the crowd a sneak peek at the riffs that will be unveiled on their upcoming album, set to be released in next month. Tickets to the show are available at The Chimes for $20. Call (225) 383-7018 for more on this show.
A musical that brings karaoke to the Manship?
Running from Thursday, May 8 to May 25, “Girls Night: The Musical” is a side-splitting comedy which is as touching as it is hilarious. The story revolves around five friends at a karaoke bar who, while singing such songs as “Man, I Fell Like A Woman” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” look back, forward and embrace the gift that is their present.
The Manship invites everyone to grab their girlfriends, sisters and workmates to come laugh, cry and dance in the aisles. Tickets range from $35-55 and are available at ManshipTheatre.org. If you’d like to find out more, call (225) 344-0334.
