On April 24, the LSU Department of French Studies held their third annual fundraiser and fashion show at Carl Maddox Field house entitled “Athletica: A Tribute to Sport.”

“Fashion is a reflection of our lives,” said Athletica’s Artistic Director, Jean Xavier Brager. “With LSU winning the National Championship, and the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Athletica emerged as a perfect fit. Our concept is to merge the noble ideals of sport and the French origins of the Modern Olympic Games into an urban and avant-garde theatricality.”

Local designers and boutiques, such as Loft 3H and Esopi were featured and Paris Parker/Aveda styled the hair and makeup. Male and female models participated in the show wearing sailor-inspired Greek and French themed outfits.

More than 300 attendees were greeted with Greek figures draped in white under the bleachers, and by black-clad demi-gods eating grapes above, offering an ambience before the show started.

Athletica doubled as a model competition; first place winner Elizabeth Yellott was awarded a $1,000 travel scholarship to France. Second place winner Dana Pollard was awarded a $500 photo shoot with local photographer, and third place winners Caroline Martens-Larsen and Rachel Schuler won a $250 spa gift certificate.

“Our main objective is to give one student the educational opportunity to travel to France and gain better insight into Francophone culture. Life doesn't start on the runway, but beyond,” said Brager.

  1. The show was really good but i think the judging was a little slanted. What about that very pretty short haired girl? She was great and i think she was robbed.
