why the FUCK is a story about a woman getting raped in "weird news"? especially a story as appalling as that?

Seconding Sam’s comment.

Jenna, could you have POSSIBLY given that article a more offensive title? The man did not "teach his ex-girlfriend to lock her door." He raped her. There is a huge difference.
And I’m with Sam--what the hell is a story about a woman being raped doing in the "weird news" section to begin with?
Are you a journalism student at LSU? if so, you might want to consider another career path. Burgerflipping 101 is always a good fallback.

WOW...so a man breaks into a woman’s house and sexually assaults her to teach her a "lesson." And that’s "weird news?" No, that’s a sex crime, idiot.

None of these things are "weird news". Two are human tragedies and one is a heinous crime.
Shame on you.

Jenna, what is wrong with you? Why would you ever think that a brutal and terrifying rape would go in the "Weird News" section?

You people are incredibly retarded. Rape is fair game for humor, whether you like it or not.

This isn’t a joke, you idiot, an actual violent crime was committed. That the perp is claiming to have done it *for her own good* is absolutely disgusting, and the fact that the story was published here as *a fucking joke* is deeply offensive to anyone capable of basic human decency. Grow the fuck up.
Mike | 2009-06-18 - 10:41:21 PM (CDT)

That’s pretty fucked up...

Popcorn, maybe rape is funny to YOU, but engage your brain for half a second and realize that it’s not funny to everyone.
You’re perfectly free to find it infinitely amusing. We’re perfectly free to think the person who wrote this column is a moron, and that you’re some kind of wacky troll who thinks that sexual assault is just fucking hysterical.
bea | 2009-06-18 - 12:33:39 AM (CDT)

Jenna, I think you really need to check yourself. It seems you’ve internalized the messages of rape culture and misogyny if you think a story about a violent rape is "amusing" enough to go under the headline "Weird News" -- especially when you (or, to be fair, your editor, perhaps) describes it as a man "teaching a woman a lesson."
The other two stories aren’t particularly funny either, especially the second. The man who broke into the church is severely ill, both with HIV/AIDS and a brain illness. It’s also really wrong and offensive to laugh at the mentally ill.
Jojoba | 2009-06-19 - 02:58:07 AM (CDT)

Amazing. Utterly amazing. The man raped her, gave a reprehensible excuse for it, and you report it as "weird".
It’s not weird. It’s not a "lesson". It’s RAPE.

you folks are off-base. it is not as if she made light of the rape. she did not comment that the ex-boyfriend’s "strategy" was a good one. All she did was bring it up.
And yes, it is weird. If you don’t think that a sexually-deranged person attempting to justify rape as a lesson in keeping your doors locked is "weird," then I don’t want to know your normal.
attack the rapist, not the columnist | 2009-06-20 - 03:20:15 PM (CDT)
-
It’s not that the news is not unusual, it is that it is NEWS before it is "weird". Just plain old tragic horrible news about how fucked up people can be, and society can allow people to be. "Weird" implies wacky hijinx.
The author of this column titled the piece "Ex-boyfriend teaches woman why it’s important to lock doors". She did not treat it as a quotation. This is commenting that the man was "teaching" not "being a terrifying freak". This is making light of a violation.
None of us has directed out disdain away from the rapist onto the author. We have included the author within our disdain for the crime, as she did not treat it seriously. I hope you can see the difference.

Let me guess, friends and family of Jenna who are coddling her instead of counseling her on how not to make the same mistake again? Loyalty can be incriminating instead of a virtue.
And Jenna, if you are a journalism major, here’s hoping you’re learning from this instead of whining that people didn’t accept your product the way you intended. That’s the way it rolls with writing.

Rape isn’t "weird news," it’s news. It doesn’t deserve a "cute" "funny" headline and the shoddy journalism style that implies the woman asked for it is disgusting.

Try to keep in mind next time that maaaybe some of your readers are decent human beings, and maaaybe they won’t find it "weird".
Filing this under "weird news" and that title? seriously? all makes light of a horrifying crime. Next time, try actual news reporting, not "let’s get a reaction lol".

In other weird news, a woman taught her two-year-old an important lesson in not-living-with-crazy-parents when she chloroformed her to death, stuck her body in a garbage bag and tossed her out into the woods. Ahahaha, high-fucking-larious! Guess that little girl learned her lesson!

Since when is the brutal assault and rape of a woman "weird" news? Wow. A crazy sicko breaks in and rapes his ex girlfriend in an effort to teach her to lock her doors. How quirky and weird. And since when is RAPE "teaching someone" something? Your headline is completely fucked up. He didn’t teach her anything, he fucking raped her.
Get another job, Jenna, or get a clue.

WTF @ the rape story... I’m glad you had the guts to call it what it is (most reporters use cop-outs like "forced sex" et al), but the victim-blaming is inexcusable. If your ex-boyfriend broke into your house and raped you, is this the story you’d want to read?
