Blind dating stories range from charming to catastrophic
By Ally Champagne
The original storyline is simple: boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy asks girl on date. People have been following this for many years without fail. Recently, however, a new phenomenon has been taking over the dating scene: blind dating.
Going on a date with someone you have never met can be exciting and nerve-wracking. Sure, the matchmakers will assure you that the other is sweet, kind and good-looking, but the chance that this is actually the case is slim to none.
For example, after being set up on a potential match-made-in-blind-dating-heaven, many questions go through one's mind. Things like, what do they look like, what should I ask them and what if she turns out to be a horrible person?
Also, there's a good chance that the first 30 minutes will be the most awkward experience ever. Have questions prepared to ask the other, and practice the most "I'm interested!" facial expression beforehand.
After these snags, blind dating actually is very exciting. Recent blind-dater and former LSU student, Melissa Bryant claims that blind dating is much more fun than actually dating.
"When you don't know who the other person is, it makes it more dangerous," said Bryant. "I recently went out with a guy who showed up to Olive Garden in a seer-sucker suit!"
Although the conversation may be hard to keep up at times, most people can find something to talk about.
"He kept asking me about my favorite fruits and vegetables," continued Bryant. "It was a little weird, but sweet that he wanted to know!"
If all else fails, the conversation can easily be put on hold with the order of an appetizer or drink.
Blind dating is fun and exciting to some, but others claim it to be catastrophic. Megan Townsend, LSU alumna, recently was set up on a blind date and promises herself that she will never do it again.
"The guy was a total slob and drank three beers before the entrées arrived!" said Townsend. "I think he was trying to get himself drunk."
Incidences like this probably occur more often than one would think. However, some might enjoy a little liquid courage before such an awkward event.
Unfortunately, there are pros and cons to going out with an unknown person. But, with adventure and fun on the pros side, one should try a blind date.
If dating is becoming old news, then blind dating will surely take its place!
