Indie Lounge brings independent music at your leisure

By Travis Leeper

For those in Baton Rouge with a taste for the undiscovered side of bluegrass, indie, and alternative, the Indie Lounge at the Roux House has your music needs covered. Hosted every Thursday night by Baton Rouge's Green Frog Music, the Indie Lounge exclusively showcases unsigned and independent music groups from across the nation - all inside the Roux House's relaxed downtown ambiance.

"We offer a great and comfortable up-close and personal lounge setting, with candles and table service," said Scott Gaskin, self-proclaimed "indie pimp" of Green Frog Music. "The tables are left out and the patio gives a place to retreat and have a drink and smoke."

Green Frog Music has been showcasing original music in Baton Rouge since 1996. Gaskin formed the Indie Lounge Concert Series in the fall of 2008. At first, the concert series was met with a marginal reaction, but it is now beginning to garner a small following in Baton Rouge.

"We're currently drawing in over a hundred guests," said Gaskin. "The Indie Lounge Concert Series was established to offer true music lovers a special setting where they can see and hear various styles of unsigned and indie label touring artists."

The Indie Lounge has featured local bands such as Six Pack Deep, Godspeed the Jackal, Devil and the Details, and The Mysterious Stranger, as well as regional and nationally touring bands such as Austin's The Steps and Alabama's Hidden Element.

"Our goal is to increase the awareness of new music," said Gaskin. "Baton Rouge has been caught up in a world of clicks and covers, and we want to try and create something a little different for everyone. Most of the previous shows have been amazing. However, the Future is unknown and will be determined by the support local music lovers give this event."

Though all of the bands share a thread of common elements, The Indie Lounge's eclectic style is not easy to pin down. With styles ranging from funk to indie to singer-songwriter, The Indie Lounge offers organic, catchy music that seems perfectly at home in the South.

For fans of indie rock or for those just interested in finding something on the outskirts of pop production, check out The Indie Lounge's MySpace page, listen to the bands, see the line-up, and get out to the Roux House. Where else in Baton Rouge can you sit down to rock out?

  2. whether you like it or not, "indie" is now a genre. it doesn’t just mean any independent music. sad, but true.

  3. personally, i hate the term "indie" ... it stinks of all the little indie rock douchbags that follow any band around labelled "indie". kind of like how Christians follow around words from the Bible. totally mindless and cliquish.
