Be among the first to catch the Art Melt

On Thursday, July 10, the Manship Theatre will be holding a preview party for this year’s Art Melt. The Art Melt has been the subject of its fair share of criticism this year, so you might think it’s worth getting an advance peek at what all the fuss is about. No matter what side of the fence you land on, it’s nice to hear an actual debate taking place in Baton Rouge about art! Tickets for the preview party are available at ManshipTheatre.org and will run you $50. You’ll be among the first to find out which pieces will take home prizes and will be able to enjoy food provided by Capital City Grill. To find out more, call (225) 334-0334.

A Louisiana legend comes to Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s

It isn’t every day that an inductee of The Louisiana Hall of Fame comes rolling through Third Street. On Saturday, July 12, Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s will welcome in Swamp pop impresario Johnny Firmin beginning at 9 p.m. Firmin, based out of Franklin, Louisiana, prides himself on his blending of country, oldies and bayou-based beats. Others seem to agree he’s doing something right. In addition to being a member of the Louisiana Hall of Fame, Firmin (and his backing band) play shows throughout the state with accordions, guitars and fans in tow. Find out more by calling (225) 636-2442.

Spicy show showcases local artists at Glassell Gallery

LSU’s School of Art’s 7th Annual Summer Invitational Art Exhibition will be opening up on Saturday, July 12, with an opening reception to be held from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Glassell Gallery. This year’s theme: Hot Tamales! More than 40 artists (including LSU alumni & faculty), were asked to create original works with this theme in mind. You can even vote for your favorite piece. Local artists who will be featured include Charles Barbier, Kathleen Lemoine, John Michael Byrd, Hunter Roth and Scott Finch. If you’d like to find out more about this exhibition or the opening reception (which will include pinatas and Mexican food), call (225) 389-7180.

Michael Mack puts a squirrel in your pants?

OK, according to FunnyBoneBatonRouge.com, the comedian who will be coming to the Bennington Avenue locale, Michael Mack, promises to put a “song in your heart and a squirrel in your pants.” I have no idea what that means. However, if you want to check that out, have at it. It also says that he has a “laugh ‘til you puke” style. Mack’s song parodies have appeared on XM Radio and have even landed him on ABC’s America’s Funniest People. If puking and trouser-dwelling squirrels sounds like something you’d be into, call up The Funny Bone at (225) 928-9996. Trust me, the cost of a ticket is cheaper than what that kind of thing will cost you on Plank Road on a Saturday night. Not that I know that for sure...

Gallery N spreads its wings with group show in July

On Saturday, July 12, Gallery N, located at 137 Alello Drive, will be showing off its brand-new, 400 square-foot expansion during an opening reception for its 19-member group show, beginning at 7 p.m. The show will run until June 28. The expansion is aimed at helping Gallery N accomplish a goal of providing Baton Rouge with a large variety of local, affordable artwork. Among the show’s many artists will be Dave Wandell, Jeana Esser, Carmen Guy and Eric Brown. To find out more about the gallery and the group show, contact Mark Nikoff at (225) 324-8936.
