Rumored Beatles game invokes mixed reactions

[6 Comment(s)]

By Ryan Burns

Apple Corps, a company created by music legends The Beatles to handle their business interests, has reportedly been talking with both Activision and MTV Games. Activision and MTV Games are the developers in charge of the Guitar Hero series and Rock Band respectively. Rumors fly about possible Beatles-themed games, tipping a hat to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.

An MTV Games spokesman did not confirm or deny the rumors, saying only, “We are talking to virtually every major rock artist all the time about ways we might get them involved in Rock Band.”

Apple Corps has been notoriously hesitant to use its licensing power in the past. For years, Apple Corps’ reluctance staved off the CD format. The Beatles music is not available online through iTunes, an almost essential step for bands nowadays.

Perhaps the caution is for fear of exploiting the music. Considering the board controlling Apple Corps includes Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono Lennon, the idea may not be much of a stretch.

Many bands have made their music playable in Rock Band, but The Beatles hits have been absent. However, in April 2007, Jeff Jones became the new chief executive of Apple Corps. Before gaining the position, Jones was famous for helping to reissue old records to enormous success.

Said Jones of his position: “The music the Beatles created remains as vital and relevant as the day it was recorded. The multiple opportunities to reach music lovers, both new and old, with the Beatles’ spectacular body of work makes this position incredibly challenging and exciting.”

The new chief executive’s influence may be enough for Beatles fans to see A Hard Day’s Night coming to a console near them, but is that what fans want? The New York Times says “no.”

In a recent editorial, The Times had this to say: “For fans of a certain age, those of us who literally grew up with the Beatles, the idea [of a Beatles-themed video game] produces a certain sense of loss.”

  1. I really hope this Beatles game ends up coming out, I’ll be the first in line to buy it!

  2. Do you think the Beatles will sign with MTV (RockBand), a company that is actually tied to the music business, or Activision-Blizzard (GuitarHero), a company that will undoubtedly be offering more moolah?

  3. Well as the biggest Beatles fan of all time... I say "YES YES YES!!!"

that would be amazing. No I don’t want terrible Beatles games popping up everywhere, I dont want a Beatles First-Person-Shooter! But with games like Rock Band ro Guitar Hero, which have proven themselves as great games which are a tribute to the music, not a sacrilege, It would be great!

As for which game? If it is just a few songs I think RockBand would be the way to go, however, if it were going to be a fully Beatles themed game (ala Guitar Hero: Aerosmith) then I would love a GuitarHero Beatles!

  5. I don’t understand how come this news is published on the 09th of July since it has been infirmed by Activision since the rumor appeared 10 days ago ? Unfortunately this was just a hype for the... erm... media. :(

  6. Why doesn’t anyone realize that this is yet again another PRIME EXAMPLE OF SELLING OUT!

When Led Zeppelin allowed their song to be used in a Cadillac commercial, I cried on the inside. When I see that The Eagles only sell their music at Wal-Mart, my bowels tighten.

Music is too close to corporate money and the video gaming world is part of it. Music should still be considered an artform. Unfortunately, it is not be treated or respected like one. It is nobody’s fault but the "fans" of music who have stood by while "artists" have sold us all out.

The Beatles should not be part of a RockBand game or a Guitar Hero game. Period. The same goes for any band with a shred of self-respect. Let Nickelback and Daughtry have the plastic-guitar wielding crowd.
