Greyhounds to play at Chelsea’s

[Comment Below]

By Sam Drakes

According to Andrew Trube, his three-piece jazz/funk band Greyhounds sound like ZZ Top meets Hall & Oates. Greyhounds will be bring their janky soul jams to Baton Rouge on Friday, Aug. 22 when they take the stage at Chelsea’s. I spoke with Trube a little bit about the band, their tour and their new record.

Greyhounds consists of Trube, who plays guitar, harmonica and vocals, and Anthony Ferrell, who plays keyboard, bass and vocals. Trube and Ferrell, the two main members of the band, met up in Los Angeles eight years ago and formed the group, though now the band is based in Austin, Texas. Whoever plays the drums changes all the time; right now Johnny Radelat is on the drums, but they’ve had many different drummers and will continue to have different people play with them in the future.

Though the Greyhounds “haven’t recorded a legitimate record in about four years,” Trube and Ferrell finally decided this year to record a three hour jam session. When asked what makes this record different from their previous work, Trube said, “It sounds like the old Greyhounds, but with more sac. It’s groovier, dirtier sounding.”

Since the release of the new album this month, the Greyhounds will be back on the road promoting the new music. They frequently travel all over the country, even venturing up to Canada. Trube said there is European interest in the band, and has hopes that sometime in the near future they’ll be able to organize a tour in Europe and Japan. They’ve played at Chelsea’s before, at both the old location and the new one. He said they’ve always had a great turnout, so he’s pumped about the upcoming show.

He’s confident that “it’ll be the best thing happening in town.” If you want to groove to some soul with sack, show up to Chelsea’s Friday night.
