This Week in the SEC
By Marie V. Roussel
No. 12 Florida (3-1, 1-1) vs. Arkansas (2-2, 0-1)
Last week, the Gators sat in the Swamp absolutely mortified. How dare someone prove their mortality and make Tim “Superman” Tebow look below average?
As for Arkansas, last Saturday against Texas was not pretty at all; do not expect this upcoming SEC match-up to be any better. Florida Coach Urban Meyer and Tebow specifically have vowed to never play like that ever again. Expect the Gators to slaughter the Razorbacks.
Prediction: Florida 45 – Arkansas 3
South Carolina (3-2, 0-2) vs. Mississippi (3-2, 1-1)
After Ole Miss Coach Houston Nutt’s biggest win of the season over Florida in the Swamp, the Rebels are returning to Oxford to take on Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks. Could their victory over Florida be the turning point of their season? Either way, it will be interesting to see how the Rebels respond after the upset.
Unless Ole Miss comes out cocky, I predict that home team advantage will prevail and the Rebels will send the Gamecocks home with a loss. Then again, South Carolina is in dire need of a conference win. Although neither team is ranked, this will be a good, close SEC game.
Prediction: Ole Miss 24 – South Carolina 21
Kentucky (4-0, 0-0) vs. No. 2 Alabama (5-0, 2-0)
First things first, I predicted the Alabama upset of Georgia last week as much as I hated to do so. With that being said, the Tide has turned (unfortunately) and Bama is looking like the powerhouse it was from back in Bear Bryant’s days.
Although all of us in Baton Rouge would love to see Nick Saban lose to unranked Kentucky, deep down we all know he will have his team prepared to not let a huge victory cause the team to lose focus. Also, this is Kentucky’s first real game of the season and those tune up games will not be enough to go to Tuscaloosa and upset the hottest team in college football.
Prediction: Alabama 35 – Kentucky 10
No. 13 Auburn (4-1, 2-1) vs. No. 19 Vanderbilt (4-0, 2-0)
Either luck is still going for the Commodores or maybe they are just that good because Vanderbilt is undefeated and have already defeated two SEC foes. Auburn, on the other hand, seems to be hanging on by threads.
Although their only loss was to LSU, the Tigers/War Eagles/Plainsmen are not one of the dominating teams of the SEC this year. They barely beat Tennessee last week and seem to still be having issues running the spread offense. Vanderbilt should be able to hold their ground and keep the luck rolling.
Prediction: Vanderbilt 21 – Auburn 14
Northern Illinois (2-2) vs. Tennessee (1-3, 0-2)
While everyone else in the SEC is either playing a conference foe or resting up on a bye week, Tennessee will enjoy a bit of a breather while they host the Huskies. After an all too close loss to Auburn last week and an overall terrible start of the season, the Vols really need a big victory at home, especially before they go on the road to Athens next weekend to take on the Bulldogs. For the Vols, this game is crucial; it’s time for them to work out all those kinks, because after this weekend, the Vols will be diving into SEC football.
Prediction: Tennessee 38 – Northern Illinois 13
