Greek Nationwide Relations

By Ally Champagne

While planning a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the LSU vs. Bama game, one has many things to consider including where to stay, who to tailgate with and how much money to save for the expensive journey.

With hotel prices skyrocketing during football season, LSU fans must plan accordingly and perhaps inconvenience themselves with a crowded hotel room for the cheaper price. However, if you're Greek, you most likely have a certain mansion that you will be able to crash at all weekend: your fraternity or sorority house.

Because Greek organizations are national, many houses can be seen throughout the rivalry SEC schools. This is beneficial for LSU Greek members when it comes time to travel to that rival school. Accommodations can be made, and members can easily band together to spend the weekend with a group of far away brothers or sisters.

Other than having a place to stay during away-game weekends, fraternities and sororities also have many other ways to connect with brothers and sisters. Most Greek organizations have handshakes that can be completed to acknowledge the brotherhood and sisterhood between chapters.

During football games, Greek sorority members usually have "[respective sorority] LOVES THE TIGERS!" with girls of other schools with their own buttons.

"I love coming to Baton Rouge and seeing my LSU sisters with their buttons on," said Melissa Frank, Vanderbilt sorority member. "It's the easiest way to spot out sisters!"

Additionally, most Greek philanthropies are completed nationally. This helps gather more money and support for the respective organization's philanthropic cause. For example, a LSU sorority and an Ole Miss sorority have the same cause, and the two join together and raise more money for the charity!

Socially, fraternity and sororities nationwide are constantly connected. Because of Facebook, groups can be made for organizations, and members can be invited and join. This is a good way to update members and keep in contact post-graduation.

Some organizations have national groups, where any member of a certain sorority can join. This is beneficial for people when trying to find a place to stay in a different city or for just a fun pen pal.

Post-graduation, being in a sorority or fraternity is highly beneficial. Some organizations have Web sites where job opportunities are posted. Also, during an interview, a potential employer will most likely relate more with a fellow Greek member, rather than someone who was not Greek.

The benefits of being in a Greek organization are endless. Fraternities and sororities across the United States have many ways of keeping in touch and helping each other out. From game-day buttons to Facebook groups, Greeks are constantly in contact and connecting socially.
