Put on some pink, everybody's doing it

Have you noticed that all your favorite brands are turning pink? Like pro football teams having pink baseball caps, and my personal favorite, those wonderful 32 oz drinks morphing into pink at gas stations?

Well, there is a good reason for it all; it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And local support around Baton Rouge is widespread and is counting on public participation to spread awareness and raise money in research efforts.

Even LSU has hopped on the bandwagon with the PINK movement takeover and has made a series of events to get students and the community involved in awareness. The LSU Student Recreation Complex is having weekly walk/runs to highlight and benefit Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

LSU University Recreation has teamed up with LSU Athletics to host a series of events throughout October for the LSU community. The Pink Ribbon Run series consists of a one mile walk or run down to benefit Breast Cancer.

These weekly walk/race's will begin at 5:30 p.m. with registration information available at the LSU UREC Web site, www.lsu.edu/urec. There will be a $10 minimum donation to for all participants to partake in the walk and the proceeds will go to the breast cancer foundation.

Breast cancer is a disease that touches and affects many lives. I for one have had to deal with breast cancer in my family and it is definitely a scary thing. If all I have to do is walk to help fundraise, then count me in.

By walking in support for the PINK initiative, you will help give awareness, spread knowledge and raise money toward research.

The PINK Initiative sponsors include: Campus Federal Credit Union, Bayou Apparel, and LSU Panhellenic Council.

The Pink Ribbon Run is held Oct. 1-31, so even if you can't make it one weekend, remember to make it the next. There is so much that can be done with minimal effort, so support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, because one out of eight women will get diagnosed within the year and that needs to change.

Walking for a good cause is not hard to do, and is a great way to get outside and enjoy the outdoors; the more involvement the better. So put on your walking shoes and wear some pink and get out there to walk for a cause!
