Headed to the rodeo?

The 2009 Block and Bridle Club Rodeo will take place November 12-13 at 7 p.m. in Parker Coliseum.

Brittany Bourg, animal science senior and Bridle Club president, said she has been a member of the organization since her freshman year. Ties through her sister, a former member, helped Bourg to quickly make friends.

The Block and Bridle Club's national Web site states its main objectives. The purpose of the organization is "to promote a higher scholastic standard and a more complete understanding of animal science among student members." The Block and Bridle Club "promotes animal agriculture through development of a program of activities that will supplement students' study of the animal sciences in colleges and universities."

To enhance professionalism of students is another goal of the organization whose members will one day be leaders in the animal agriculture industry. Members of the club are often pursuing some phase of animal agriculture as a profession.

"This [the rodeo] is our club's biggest fund raiser and one of our greatest traditions," Bourg said. "We donate 10 percent of our proceeds to Braveheart Children in Need, a local organization that focuses on the cause of improving the quality of life for children who are experiencing the emotional trauma of being removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect.

Bourg added,"We also collect toys at the rodeo to give to them as well. Whether people participate or just come to watch the show, they never leave disappointed. Admission is $5."

"Estimates of 300-400 people attend the rodeo. We probably have around 80-100 students who participate also," Bourg said.

"All current LSU students are invited to attend and compete in the annual event. Students compete for prizes, all-around buckles and trophies for the winning fraternity and sorority," according to the local chapter Web site.

The Block and Bridle Club also tailgates for home football games on South Stadium Drive, right in front of the Dairy Store. Students are encouraged to stop by for some good food, company and fun! Meetings are held every other Thursday in Room 12 of Francioni Hall.

"I have many favorite memories, but my favorite has to be my freshman year at our rodeo," Bourg said. "I really got to know a lot of the actives and alumni that weekend. Another is the scavenger hunt we did in the fall. It was a fun bonding experience for the new members, who are called pooches," Bourg said.

  1. So sad... torturing and terrorizing animals in the name of "entertainment" and "tradition". Certainly we’ve evolved passed this frivolous practice. tsk, tsk
