Joe Krown Trio: Neapolitan flavor, and it's not the ice cream
By Morgan Mitchener
Three men, one band; its Joe Krown Trio- but thankfully they don't wear tight pants or have choreographed dance moves. Original by their old-school trio aspect yet different by their jam band influences. This progressive group makes music mixed with funk and soul, and will get you up on your feet with their fluid jazz.
Joe Krown Trio is playing Wed., Nov. 4 at Bogie's starting at 10:30 p.m. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. and ladies will have free drinks from 8-10 p.m.
Joe Krown (Hammond B-3), Walter Wolfman Washington (guitar, vocals) and Russell Batiste Jr. (drums, background vocals) joined forces in March 2007 and have been collaborating musically with their unique talents ever since.
The group formed in a happenstance manner, when Krown had no where to store his 325 pound organ (Hammond B-3), he cut a deal with the owner of the New Orleans venue, The Maple Leaf.
The owner told Krown he could store the organ in his club, in exchange for Joe Krown Trio (JKT) agreeing to play Sundays at The Maple Leaf; that is where it all began.
It was there, inside The Maple Leaf, that the marriage of good timing and great dynamics shot-gunned the band from only playing on Sundays to life of the road. It was within the first couple years together that JKT was discovered playing Jazz Fest.
After their performance, the group was instantly booked by Piedmont Talent, which spread and familiarized the bands' name. Since, JKT has been featured in Rolling Stone and will be on tour later this season with their newest CD, titled Live at the Maple Leaf.
In an interview with Tiger Weekly, Krown elaborated on their quick start, "I always knew I wanted to play with Walter, but when we were interviewing for a drummer, Russell just clicked, and we all had a really good feeling about the future."
The band has plans, after the tour, to begin work on more tracks in efforts to release a future CD. Their writing process involves a mesh of each man's personal taste and distinct expertise.
Krown said about their music, "Russell is a fluid writer, he does mostly covers and I jump between the two. But, we all bring something to the table."
