On November 15, the LSU Museum of Art's newest exhibit, Of People and Places: Contemporary Works from the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, will begin its three month showing. The exhibit will consist of numerous contemporary art pieces in the vast JPMorgan Chase collection, ranging from paintings to sculptures, from 19 renowned artists, as well as many other promising, emerging artists.

Some of the highlights of the exhibition are nine silk screens by Andy Warhol, known for his portraits of iconic American products, two film still photographs by Cindy Sherman, best known for her conceptual photographs, a photo titled "Teenage Couple on Hudson Street, New York City" by Diane Arbus, who often captured images of people living on the edges of society, a large drawing by Latvian-born Vija Celmins, as well as a video installation by Saudi-Arabian artist Muhammed Kazem.

These works, and the myriad of others that will be on display, aim to "question who we are as individuals and as communities, and what our relationship is with our changing environment - all critical issues in the world today, regardless of social and cultural geography", says Natalie A. Mault, Assistant Curator for the LSU Museum of Art and the Curator of Record for the Of People and Places exhibition.

According to Tom Livesay, Director of the LSU Museum of Art, this exhibition was chosen specifically to celebrate milestones for not only the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, but for LSU and its Museum of Art as well.

"This exhibition previews a larger survey to celebrate the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection's 50th Anniversary in 2009. Their anniversary coincides with the LSU Museum of Art's 50th Anniversary and LSU's sesquicentennial," said Livesay. "What better way to celebrate the anniversary of these organizations than through an exhibition that promotes expression and celebrates diversity?"

The Of People and Places exhibit will be on display at the LSU Museum of Art, at the Shaw Center for the Arts, in downtown Baton Rouge from November 15 to February 14.

Students who are visiting for a school project or a University class are welcome to visit Of People and Places free of charge, while a student visitor pass is $6. Students can also purchase discounted memberships for $15. The membership allows the student to attend museum functions for a year, for free, while also giving them access to private openings and special discounts at nearby restaurants.
