UREC innovations in fitness
By Philip DiStefano
If you haven't been to the Student Recreation Complex lately, you might want to go check out what you've been missing. UREC recently introduced their Innovations initiative - a program that promises to bring the latest in fitness technology right to patrons' fingertips, both in the form of new, technologically advanced fitness equipment and in digital services offered.
One of UREC's partners, Life Fitness, is at the forefront of the fitness industry in bio-mechanics research. They are also partnered with both Apple and Nike for seamless integration with their fitness equipment and the Nike + iPod Sport Kit.
Another push for technological advancement that's been making its way through all industries is the "green" movement. There is no exception to this movement in the fitness industry, as UREC sports both the Woodway Speedboard and the TRX Suspension Training System. Both of these pieces of equipment are completely human powered - no electricity is needed to run them, unlike traditional fitness equipment, such as a treadmill.
Did you know that UREC offers online fitness classes? If you keep telling yourself you don't have time in your schedule to go work out, then the GroupX service may be just the solution for you. Classes offered on the UREC website include Core Training, Gentle Yoga, Beginning Kickboxing, Hip Hop Dance, Cool Down Stretching, and Resistance Training. This is a video-on-demand service, and like the name implies, it is available for your use anytime and anywhere that you have an Internet connection.
UREC believes their new offerings will reinvigorate patrons' workout routines.
"The new technology definitely provides patrons with variety and access. The variety comes into play with equipment that challenges your body in new and different ways, which helps to expand one's exercise regimen and keep workouts fresh and exciting," said Melissa Longino, associate director of recreational services at UREC.
With these technologies, UREC is able to extend their reach to even more people in an industry that is normally not very extensible. Ashley Hoft, biochemistry senior, thinks the innovations initiative is very helpful.
"[The online classes] are extremely convenient, especially when you don't live close to campus. I have class until 4:30pm most days and find it difficult to find a parking spot at UREC at that time...The classes give you a step-by-step run down of all the moves. It's almost like having a personal trainer in the room with you."
So if you're a techie or a fitness enthusiast or anyone else that wants to stay in shape, check out what UREC has to offer. Through exciting new partnerships, services, and initiatives, UREC is bringing a lot to the table for all visitors.
