Many of Louisiana’s children live in poverty

Louisiana agencies and non-profits have combined efforts in order to reduce child poverty in Louisiana. Louisiana ranks second, just behind Mississippi, in childhood poverty rankings in the United States, as reported by the U. S. Census Bureau 2007 American Community Survey. Full 26.8 percent of children residing in Louisiana, 18 years and younger, were living below the poverty level in the year 2007, explains the aforementioned report. This is an alarming number.  As a result, Louisiana further progresses its efforts to “reduce child poverty in the state by 50 percent by 2019,” says the Advocate. It is the hope of all involved that both private and public combined efforts dramatically impact these children, addressing the root of the problem as well as preventing further increase of children living in poverty.

Catholic-Muslim relations improve

Catholic and Muslim leaders have come together to improve their religious relations, “condemning terrorism, protecting religious freedom and fighting poverty,” according to CNN. Often, past prejudices can prevent religious sectors from moving forward and accomplishing the goals of both religions, and in response, the two have come together in a promise to respect one another’s beliefs, even though they may not agree with that way of thinking.
