Berlusconi's tax fraud trial postponed due to hectic schedule
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has had his tax fraud hearings rescheduled to, at the earliest Jan. 18, 2009, due to his hectic schedule and official appointments as prime minister. His procedural hearings, originally scheduled for Nov. 30, were set to answer a claim that Berlusconi has evaded $45 million in taxes through a media company he owns. Berlusconi could be sentenced with time in prison if found guilty, but the prime minister claims the charges are politically motivated. (CNN.com)

Drug prices rise in light of health care reform
Drug producers are raising the prices of pharmaceuticals at a fast rate in light of the health care reform. Drug producers are promising an $8 billion a year decrease in price as soon as the new health care reform is approved by legislature, but in the mean time, pharmaceuticals have increased in price by 9 percent in the last year. Drug makers are defending their position by stating they have substantial reason to do so, such as to fund medical research that produces new pharmaceutical cures for diseases. Differing opinions believe the price increase is related to the legislation and the need to increase profits before it is passed. (nytimes.com)

Downtown Baton Rouge landmark set to close
Latil Stationery Co., also known as Gay Boudreaux's stationery store, which has been run by her family for 76 years, will be closed on December 31. The customer base for the stationary store has significantly decreased in recent years, as people tend to shop at Wal-Mart and other low price stores. The retro, mom-and-pop store has become a downtown land mark, and loyal customers are sad to see it go, especially with the quality of service and variety of products that it stocks, which you cannot buy at national chains.
