TW Writer Picks: Holiday Shopping Tips
Holiday Shopping 2009

Every Christmas, I always have one person who presents a present dilemma. Whether it's a family member or a Secret Santa pick that I do not know well, I always go back to a safe resort that everyone likes: food! A trip to the local farmer's market downtown on a Saturday morning or a visit to a store that sells healthy, foreign, or specialized foods are great treats and guarantee some great gift ideas. I love the fresh pecan sweets that are sold downtown, and they make a wonderful present or stocking stuffer.

One of my favorite gifts to give is a themed basket because I always shop with a specific person in mind, not a place. They are really cute and super easy. I'll put together something like a wine and cheese basket for my food-lover friends or a spa-themed one for my close girlfriends. I'll usually include two or three nice things in the basket along with a few smaller ones.

The Backpacker located off of Jefferson Highway offers a lot of unique and interesting gift ideas for the avid outdoors individual. It's a nice retreat from the normal holiday present excursion. Check it out in Baton Rouge or Lafayette.

World Market is always my one-stop (and usually last minute) holiday shopping destination. Between the funky jewelry, handmade scarves, extensive wine selection, exotic snacks, illustrated cook books, quirky kids toys, and unconventional housewares, I know I'll find a great gift at a decent price for everyone on my shopping list.

My favorite place to buy gifts for my eco-conscious friends and family is at Noelie Harmon on Corporate Blvd. They have a great selection of fair-trade and local gifts like clothes, jewelry, and bath products at prices that fit every tree-hugger's budget.

My favorite place to Christmas shop is at Mignon Faget on Jefferson Hwy. Mignon Faget has reasonably priced glassware and decorations, including an entire fleur de lis section! The gifts are appropriate for family members and friends, as well.

I go to the Sanctuary for my gift shopping. The building is actually a converted church, and they carry decorative items that friends and family are likely to use again and again on special occasions.

My favorite place to shop in Baton Rouge right now is World Market. They have the coolest stuff and the widest selection of anywhere I have found in the city. The prices are fair, the service is competent, and the variety of products makes it easy to find a great gift for almost anyone.

The Compact Disc Store on Jefferson Highway is the perfect place to pick up something for any music lover on your list. The Compact Disc Store sells music of all genres -- from local bands to big-name and indie acts. The store also has a great selection of new and used vinyl records to browse through for that audiophile in your family or group of friends.
