Great Greek gift ideas around town

Holiday Shopping 2009

Holiday gift shopping can include long hours, expensive credit card bills and the constant struggle of deciding what to buy friends. After Thanksgiving, the chances of finding a good present for a reasonable price are low, considering the hundreds of people who procrastinate on purchasing gifts. Prices rise and choices deplete, and you ultimately find yourself gift-less for the holiday season.

Being a member of a Greek organization, one is friendly with hundreds of people. The need to buy presents for all is unreasonable, but most Greeks will probably buy four or five presents each. The easiest way to gift for Greeks is to venture to one of the many Greek gift stores in Baton Rouge and purchase gift items of friend's respective sororities.

The Baton Rouge area has many boutiques that offer Greek items, including Balfour House and Sanctuary Home and Gifts.

Balfour House, located at 4350 Highland Road, carries almost anything in Greek letters. From Greek picture frames to pillowcases, the letters of LSU sorority and fraternities grace all covers. Also, Balfour House does in-house lettering of sweatshirts and tank tops that would make great Christmas gifts.

"All of my friends want gifts from Balfour House because of its wide selection of choices and reasonable prices," Lindsey Morris, SLU sorority member and Baton Rouge native. "They're super quick at lettering tees, too."

Another local boutique that carries Greek items is Sanctuary Home and Gifts. The store is located at 7480 Highland Road and has many Greek accessories, including small pillows, necklaces and key chains. Also, Sanctuary Home and Gifts carries Vera Bradley merchandise, which is also a great gift idea.

In order to gift successfully, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money. Many Christmas presents can be made and can still look professionally done. An idea is purchasing plain wine glasses - $.99 from Hobby Lobby - and decorating them with paint pens.

In addition, Hobby Lobby carries many other glass items that can be decorated and gifted for Christmas, including vases, pitchers and ornaments. This is a simple and cheap way to give something from the heart.

The best part of Christmas is giving. Greek members can rely on Baton Rouge boutiques like Balfour House for fun, Greek-oriented gifts or can make their own with glasses and paint pens. It's not difficult to gift successfully and can be done without spending too much cash.
