2009 Bowl Predictions
By Jonathan Bellah
The college football season is down to its final stretch with only two games remaining in the season, excluding conference championship games. Bowl projections are beginning to narrow down and the SEC currently boasts nine bowl eligible schools, with two other schools within striking distance of eligibility as well. I'm sure the most important thing on your mind right now is where do I think these teams will end up?
Arkansas (SEC) vs. Boston College (ACC)
Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl
December 27th, Nashville TN, 8 pm, ESPN
Arkansas has given fans a lot of hope for the future with many flashes of brilliance from Ryan Mallett this season, who still has two years of eligibility. Mallett has thrown for 2885 yards and 23 touchdowns already this season. Arkansas should finish the season with a bowl victory.
Ole Miss (SEC) vs. Missouri (Big 12)
Independence Bowl
December 28th, Shreveport LA, 5 pm ESPN
It's been a disappointing season for the Rebels, who started the season with national title hopes. Jevan Snead has not lived up to the hype that surrounded him earlier this season.
Georgia (SEC) vs. Virginia Tech (ACC)
Chick-fil-A Bowl
December 31, Atlanta GA, 7:30 pm ESPN
Georgia has a lot of issues to fix on defense before they can come close to challenging Florida in the SEC East.
Tennessee (SEC) vs. Wisconsin (Big Ten)
Outback Bowl
January 1, Tampa FL, 11 am, ESPN
Tennessee hasn't become bowl-eligible yet, but they have remaining games against Vanderbilt and Kentucky and need only one win to become eligible. Lane Kiffin is giving fans in Rocky Top plenty to be optimistic about for the future.
Auburn (SEC) vs. Penn State (Big Ten)
Capital One Bowl
January 1, Orlando FL, 1 pm, ABC
Auburn started the season with five straight wins, but has struggled since. Gene Chizik has done a lot to improve this offense and that work should pay off with a bowl victory.
South Carolina (SEC) vs. Houston (C-USA)
AutoZone Liberty Bowl
January 2, Memphis TN 5:30 pm ESPN
Despite having lost three straight, South Carolina has played well in a lot of important games this season and in some ways this season is a success. Steve Spurrier has done good work digging South Carolina from the depths of the SEC.
LSU (SEC) vs. Oklahoma State (Big 12)
AT&T Cotton Bowl
January 2, Arlington TX, 2 pm Fox
The Tigers have a lot of improvements to make on offense, but John Chavis has given the LSU defense a renewed sense of power. Though it's not the season that we had hoped for here in Baton Rouge, it's certainly not a failure.
Kentucky (SEC) vs. West Virginia (Big East)
Papajohns.com Bowl
January 2, Birmingham AL 2 pm ESPN
The Wildcats are 4-0 in non-conference play this season. The Wildcats' running game has been their crutch this season, and should do well against West Virginia's defense.
Alabama (SEC) vs. TCU (MWC)
Allstate Sugar Bowl
January 1, New Orleans, LA 8:30 pm Fox
This is more of a hope than a prediction, I'd rather Urban Meyer win his third ring in four years than Saban win another title.
Florida (SEC) vs. Texas (Big 12)
Citi BCS National Championship
January 7, Pasadena, CA, 8 pm Fox
The Gators have proven week-in-and-week-out that they are the best team in the country. They haven't faltered yet, and likely won't.
