Lindsay Rae Spurlock
Cabaret, Cocktails, and Swordfish?
By Kristina Stafford
Using a swordfish as lyrical material for her music, Lindsay Rae Spurlock will be lighting up the stage Friday, November 20, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. for the Manship Theater's Cabaret and Cocktails Series.
Spurlock is a true musical jewel, with a beautiful ability for story-telling through song. Her music is uplifting, fun, and meaningful. This self-proclaimed quirky, happy gal has plenty to be happy about, as her career has skyrocketed in recent times.
"I attribute my success thus far to many things: having a dream, having confidence about my talent, FOCUS, working my booty off, making genuine friendships, trying to be optimistic... Oh, and I just had to learn to make it in the meantime. I try to be open minded and willing to grow," Spurlock said.
Spurlock also has some off-the-wall pre-show rituals to go along with her work ethic and talent.
"Warm up! Drink water! Oh yeah, and, I put one sock on when I was 16 when I picked up a guitar for the first time. Since then, I haven't taken it off. Sometimes I wear it under my tights, but it's always there. Before a show I will hop around on that foot with the sock on it, for luck. Sometimes, just sometimes, depending on the show, I will take my princess wand and wave it around, ya know, spreading the magic," Spurlock explained.
It would be easy to assume that a musical talent like Spurlock has been writing and playing music for years, but Spurlock didn't actually start playing guitar until well into her teenage years. However, it may be unsurprising that Spurlock is the cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis.
"I picked up the guitar when I was about sixteen, and began writing songs. I knew then that this was bigger than me. I felt such a release. I could fully express what was happening in my life with a song... with music! How freakin' cool is that?!?"
Using life as an example, her songs are easily relatable, making them an outlet for Spurlock as well as the listener. She has a simplistic way of telling a musical story using the most basic subjects, which she couples with an array of quirky, pop beats and tones.
"I enjoy being outdoors. I like helping people. Love kids, love laughing, making jokes, puns, making other people laugh. I enjoy being healthy (running/eating right).I love animals, and I double love baby animals."
Spurlock has a unique spunky energy that beams through her. It is easy to tell just by seeing her that she is excited about what she does. She truly loves music, and hopes to spread joy through that medium. When asked how she would get people out to her shows, this was Spurlock's reply:
"Hey you! Ya wanna come to my show? It's probably most definitely 100% going to knock your socks off - but not mine....I will still have that one sock on! Bring 10,000 of your closest friends! I will give each of them 1 hug!" Spurlock laughed.
