Classic Christmas Movies
By Kathleen Davis
Every year we all look forward to watching Christmas movies. With so many choices, I think it would be best if there was a list of some of the better ones to choose from. Well, if you keep reading, you will find one.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” – Now, I know a lot of people who don’t enjoy this movie, but they are crazy. This is the quintessential Christmas movie. Now, in case you have been living under a rock for you whole life, I’ll give you a rundown on the movie. Jimmy Stewart’s character is thinking his life is bad and an angel comes down to show him what the world would be like without him. This will undoubtedly be on your TV Christmas Eve. Check it out.
Any version of “A Christmas Carol” – I don’t think I would even want to count how many different ways and times this story has been made. My personal favorite is a “Muppet Christmas Carol.” You should definitely find that. But don’t forget the usual run of the mill versions, the lack luster Lifetime (television for women) versions, or the Mickey Mouse version. Even with all of the different versions, the story still touches your heart every time.
“A Christmas Story” – Everyone loves this movie. It really is a classic Christmas movie. You won’t have to look to hard for this movie, because the cable channel TNT plays it for twenty-four hours every year. You guys know the story, a young boy wants a BB gun so bad for Christmas, but his family is opposed to it. Hilarity ensues as he tries to convince his parents to let him have it.
“Christmas Every Day” – I don’t think this one is quite as popular as “A Christmas Story,” but I remember watching this film a lot as a youngster. The premise is very similar to that of “Groundhog Day.” A teenage boy keeps reliving Christmas. He faces the normal teenage movie problems — he wants a girl, he can’t play basketball, and his dad might lose his job. Lucky for him, he gets to live Christmas everyday until he gets it right and has the perfect Christmas.
“Miracle on 34th Street” – This is a wonderful Christmas movie about never forgetting that magic is real. The 1947 version of this film is so perfect that I don’t know how anyone could refuse to watch it. To sum it up for those you haven’t seen it, a lawyer defends a man who claims to be Santa Claus and tries to prove in court that he is the real thing. The whole world revives their belief in Santa and joy is everywhere.
There are so many more that I could list, but those are just a few of the good Christmas movies out there. If you really want to get into the Christmas spirit, make some cocoa, decorate a tree, and pop in one of these movies. You will surely be on your way to a merry time.
